What is AI search blindness?
AI search blindness means a business is invisible to the tools its customers now use to find things. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews for a recommendation in a given category, an answer is assembled from sources those systems can crawl, parse, and verify. If a site blocks their crawlers, lacks machine-readable structure, or can't be tied to a verifiable entity, it simply doesn't exist in that answer — even if it ranks on classic Google page one.
Why most sites are blind without knowing it
Three silent failure modes account for nearly all cases:
- Blocked or absent crawler access. Many sites ship default configurations that exclude AI crawlers like GPTBot — often without the owner ever making that choice.
- No machine-readable layer. No schema markup, no structured FAQs, no llms.txt. The content exists for humans but is unparsable noise for machines.
- Fragmented identity. The business name, social profiles, and website don't cross-reference each other, so AI systems can't verify the entity is real — and unverifiable sources don't get cited.
What the check measures
The 12 questions above map to the same layers AI engines use to decide who to cite: traffic-source concentration, income dependency on search, and content/entity positioning. The result sorts exposure into three tiers and points to the move that matters most first — not a generic checklist.

Frequently asked questions
- What is AI search blindness?
- AI search blindness is when AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) cannot see, parse, or verify your site — so your business never appears in their answers, regardless of your classic Google rankings.
- Can I rank on Google and still be AI-blind?
- Yes. Classic rankings and AI citations use different infrastructure. A page-one site can still block AI crawlers, lack structured data, or have an unverifiable entity — making it invisible inside AI-generated answers.
- How long does the AI visibility check take?
- About 60 seconds for the 12 yes/no questions in this audit. It scores your exposure instantly — no email required.
- What does the audit cost?
- The 60-second exposure check is free. If the result shows fixable gaps, the deployable fix templates are in the BEARTH VAULT.
- Can I fix AI blindness myself?
- Most fixes are configuration, not code: robots.txt entries, schema snippets, an llms.txt file, entity cross-links. The Audit Kit ships copy-paste templates for each.
